A Dining Room Makeover Surprise for Mom

I love my momma! No really, I love her! I never truly appreciated her until I became a parent. For Christmas this year I decided to makeover her dining room. I think she truly deserves it! I wasn't exactly sure how I would be able to without her knowing... I mean she does live at her house. :) I found out she would be out of town for a week and used that time to get everything done.

My mom's house was built in the 1980's and much hasn't changed inside since it was built. In addition, my mom's furniture is a collection of hand-me-downs. The medium brown molding makes the space look dark and the added fact that her house also does not get any natural sunlight doesn't help. A combination of this makes for a space that is much needed for makeover. Here is the dining room before the makeover.

The main thing I knew that needed to be done was to lighten up the space since there is no natural sunlight. This was easily achieved with paint. I chose a nice neutral color for wall and a crisp white color for all the trim, including the handrail that divides the dining room from the living room....and wow, what a difference!

I didn't intend on spending a lot of money, since I knew I was spending for great chairs, so instead of purchasing a new table I stained her old table. My blogger buddy, Erin, has a great table staining tutorial on this that I used.

This rug here was previously used in my dining room. It was a bit too traditional feeling for my space but it goes perfectly here. The curtains was a great deal from World Market at only $10.00 per panel!

My mom absolutely loves the room! She loves the white trim and said "We need to paint the other rails too!" She usually works in her dining room but she didn't want to work in there today because she didn't want to mess it up. lol. That cracked me up! The picture below is when she first saw it, 7:00 AM. The picture isn't "blog ready" but I loves how it captures her taking it all in.

I have to give major thanks to my BF and my cousin/sister, Ellen. I could not have finished what I did with the time I had without them! Thank you so much my loves! Drinks on me... :)

There is still more to come for this room. I'm still working on the rest of her chairs. But in the meantime...what do you think?

  8. The only things I think I'd do different is add a few pillows (zebra or leopard print) to the chairs, also (to make the art look bigger), make a frame that is about 6" bigger than the outside of the frame of the picture, pin gun it to the wall....Immediately your eye see's it as a bigger framed picture with a mat the color of the walls,.....and add a vase with flowers (real) to the center............
    Love the table and chairs......
